چکیده مقاله:

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by elevated blood sugarand abnormalities in insulin secretion and action. There are many anti-diabetic plants, whichmight supply useful sources for developing new medicines that can be used in treatment ofdiabetes mellitus. The primary objective of the present investigation is to evaluate the antidiabeticproperties of the aerial parts of Amygdalus lycioides in streptozocin-induced diabeticrats. Sixty rats were divided into 6 groups: streptozocin-induced diabetic control, insulintreateddiabetic group, and four Amygdalus lycioides-treated diabetic groups (125, 250, 500,and 1000 mg/kg/day). After 2 weeks of plant extract administration, the effects of extracts onblood glucose, body weight, BUN, creatinine, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglyceride, totalprotein, Na, K, and plasma enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase andalkaline phosphatase) were analyzed. The pancreas of rats was also stained for stereologicalstudies. Phytochemical evaluation of this extract showed the presence of flavonoids and tanninscompounds. Glucose serum levels and glucose tolerance test showed a decrease in treatmentwith Amygdalus lycioides (1000 mg/kg). Serum total cholesterol, LDL, triglyceride, creatinineand alkaline phosphatase levels were decreased significantly by the extract but aspartateaminotransferase found to be increased after treatment. The total number and numerical densityof beta cells increased in the Amygdalus lycioides group (1000 mg/kg). It seems that Amygdaluslycioides may act as a potential drug to treat diabetes and its complications. However, moreinvestigations should be done to more clarify these results.

Antidiabetic effects of quercetin in streptozocin-induced diabetic rats.

Effects of the intraperitoneal injection of quercetin in streptozocin-induced diabetic and normal rats were investigated and compared. Although quercetin had no effect on plasma glucose level of normal animals, it significantly and dose-dependently decreased the plasma glucose level of streptozocin-induced diabetic rats. Glucose tolerance tests of the diabetic animals approached those of normal...

Anti-diabetic Activity of Methanolic Extract of Chicory Roots in Streptozocin Induced Diabetic Rats

To study the antidiabetic activity of Chicory roots methanolic extract (MEC) in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. MEC of root was subjected to preliminary qualitative phytochemical investigations by using standard procedures. The extract (400 mg/kg p.o.) was screened for antidiabetic activity in STZ-induced diabetic rats (30 mg/kg, i.p.). Acute oral toxicity study for the test extract...

Attenuation of Diabetic Nephropathy by Carvacrol through Anti-oxidative Effects in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats

Background and Objectives: Diabetes, a common metabolic disorder, is prevalent in many countries. Nephropathy is a main debate’s side effect. Role of oxidative stress is well known in induction of diabetic nephropathy while carvacrol is a potent anti-oxidant that might attenuate oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of carvacrol in d...

Anti-diabetic effects of 1-methylnicotinamide (MNA) in streptozocin-induced diabetes in rats.

1-Methylnicotinamide (MNA), a major endogenous metabolite of nicotinamide, possesses anti-thrombotic and anti-inflammatory activity, and reverses endothelial dysfunction. In the present work, we investigated whether such a vasoprotective profile of MNA activity affords anti-diabetic action in rats. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) in Sprague-Dawley rats. Eight weeks after STZ inject...

Anti-diabetic effect of aqueous extract Crocus sativus L. in tartrazine induced diabetic male rats

Introduction: In this study, we evaluated the antidiabetic and antidiabetogenic effect of saffron against diabetes induced by artificial dye tartrazine on normal male rats. Methods: Dried saffron was macerated for 12 hours in distilled water before usage and crude extract was used to treat male rats. Rats were divided into 5 groups consisted of 6 rats and treatment was performed daily a...
